About

Kate Kowalczik, LCSW

My path to becoming a therapist began with my education in social work – a field I was drawn to due to the strong emphasis on social justice and understanding people within the full context of their communities, identities, and lived experiences. After completing my Master of Social Work at the University of Utah, I earned my supervised clinical hours in New York City while working in a diverse range of settings including addiction services and transitional housing for families. A common theme emerged with many of my clients: trauma, and the powerful emotional scars it can leave behind. This realization sparked my passion for understanding and facilitating trauma treatment.

This work has been a decade-long journey of both personal and professional growth. I am currently working towards completing my EMDR certification – which is a trauma-specific modality. I additionally utilize traditional talk-therapy techniques, and take a collaborative approach with my clients to determine specific interventions.  I consider it a great privilege to participate in the psychotherapy process, where I get to watch people step into the lives they have dreamed of.

Outside of the therapy room, you’re likely to find me in the pottery studio, climbing gym, or curled up on the couch with a good book (or TV show). I work with clients virtually, based out of my home in Salt Lake City, Utah.

My philosophy

Cultural Humility

I acknowledge in the therapy room the profound impact that oppression can have on well-being. I prioritize my clients’ lived experience and cultural knowledge over any assumptions I might have. I actively work to address power imbalances in therapy while advocating for systemic changes that support equity and inclusion.

Neurodiversity- Affirming

I believe neurodivergent individuals have many inherent strengths. I address only the symptoms and concerns that my clients identify as bothersome. I adapt and modify treatment approaches and interventions as necessary, and encourage clients to speak honestly when something doesn’t work for them.

Trauma-Focused

I recognize that you are the expert on your own experience, and I work to ensure our relationship feels collaborative and empowering. I understand that symptoms and behaviors often represent adaptive responses to difficult experiences, and I work to understand rather than pathologize these responses. I believe that genuine connection and trust are essential for healing.
